The 7-Series is the first-ever plug-in hybrid from BMW in India

BMW has launched a facelifted version of its flagship sedan, the 7-Series in India at a whopping price of Rs. 1.2 crore and it goes as high as Rs. 2.42 crores (ex-showroom). Not a brand-new car from the brand but for its mid-life update, the new 7-series gets a larger, more prominent kidney grille.

The 2019 BMW 7-Series is launched in India in 6 variants – 730Ld (diesel) trim and 740Li (petrol) trim, 745Le (plug-in Hybrid) and M760Li. The sedan is the first-ever plug-in hybrid from the carmaker in India, while the previous generation had a conventional hybrid. It will arrive on Indian shores as Completely Knocked Down (CKD) units and will be assembled at the carmaker’s Chennai facility.

Balancing the face out are sleek headlamps with revised LED light signature. The air intakes are larger than before to give the car an aggressive look. Subtle changes are made to the rear i.e. a quad-exhaust setup finished in chrome and fresh LED impressions for the taillights.

Inside, the 2019 BMW 7-Series boasts a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster with a 10.25-inch control display on the centre. Newly-designed leather-wrapped steering wheel and updated panels with driver assistance features, optional Bowers and Wilkins 3D surround system and a rear-seat infotainment system are some new bells and whistles offered on this opulent vehicle.

The petrol engine on the 740Li is a 3-litre, 6 cylinder unit delivering 340 PS and 450 Nm of torque. The engine claims to achieve the 0-100 km/hr sprint in 5.6 seconds. Hybrid on offer is the 745Le xDrive which gets a petrol motor similar to the 740Li but returns 286 PS and 450 Nm. Its electric motor delivers an additional 84 PS and 265 Nm, taking the combined output to 290 PS and 600 Nm. The claimed mileage is a good 39.53 km/l.

The top of the line M760Li xDrive gets a 6.5-litre V12 petrol, which belts out 609 PS and a staggering peak torque of 850 Nm. It claims to achieve triple-digit-speeds from standstill in just 3.8 seconds while the fuel efficiency is rated at 7.96 km/l. Petrol variants too are mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission like the diesel engine trims.

The diesel variant on offer has a 3.0-litre, 6-cylinder engine which delivers 265 PS and 620 Nm of torque while claiming to sprint from 0-100 km/hr in 6.2 seconds. Mated to an 8-speed steptronic gearbox, it claims to return 17.66 km/l.

The new BMW 7 Series rivals the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, Jaguar XJ-L and the upcoming Audi A8L.
