Volkswagen has taken the wraps off the 2019 Jetta at the Detroit Motor Show. The seventh generation Jetta is based on the carmaker’s flexible MQB platform and will rival the Toyota Corolla Altis, Skoda Octavia and Hyundai Elantra. The new platform has made the sedan more spacious and in terms of dimensions, the new Jetta measures 4702 mm in length (up by 43 mm), 1799 mm in width (up by 21 mm) and 1459 mm in height (up by 6 mm). Wheelbase too has gone up by 35 mm to 2686 mm on the new model.

The design takes an understated yet sophisticated approach. The front fascia is adorned with the large hexagonal-shaped grille and the new LED headlights. The lower part of the bumper is uniquely and aggressively designed and so is the sculpted bonnet. At the side profile, there are multi-spoke alloy wheels and a sharp character line running from the front fender to the tail-lights. The rear gets a new set of LED tail-lights and a lip spoiler. The 2018 Jetta is more aerodynamic and thanks to this the car is more fuel-efficient and the coefficient of drag is now 0.27.

The interior too has gone through a massive overhaul. There is a new dashboard with two screens – 10.2-inch screen known as the Active Info display for the driver and an 8-inch touchscreen for the infotainment. The latter gets a host of connectivity options like Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and MirrorLink. A 400-watt Beats audio system is offered as optional. Depending on the trim levels, there are new seats being offered with electric adjustability, heating and even cooling function as well. The US-spec Jetta will get a range of safety and driver assist features like Front Assist with Autonomous Post-Collision Braking System, Rear Traffic Alert, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Assist and Blind Spot Monitor.

Powering the 2019 Volkswagen Jetta is a 1.4-litre TSI petrol motor that churns out 150 PS of power and 250 Nm of torque. The powertrain comes mated to an 8-speed automatic gearbox while a 6-speed manual will be available in the lower spec trims. The German automaker has skipped the frugal 2.0-litre TDI diesel mill and this could be bad news for the Jetta brand. While it is confirmed there will not be a European version, there is still no clarity whether the sedan will be making it to India.

The new Jetta will be launched in the second quarter of 2018 for the US market and will be offered in four trim levels – S, SE, SEL and SEL Premium.
