Tata Motors to introduce new 1.5-litre NA petrol engine for Sierra lineup
Tata Motors is preparing to expand its petrol engine line-up, with a new 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine set to power several upcoming models, including the much-anticipated Tata Sierra. This new engine is expected to complement the brand’s existing petrol offerings and enhance Tata’s competitiveness in the SUV market.
The new 1.5-litre NA petrol engine is reportedly derived from Tata’s upcoming 1.5-litre direct-injection turbocharged petrol unit, which was showcased at the 2023 Auto Expo. While the turbocharged version has seen delays as Tata Motors works to refine it before its market launch, development on the naturally aspirated version is progressing steadily.
This engine is expected to play a crucial role in keeping the entry-level variants of the Tata Sierra competitively priced, allowing the SUV to rival popular models like the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos and Maruti Grand Vitara, all of which offer 1.5-litre petrol options for their base variants. For reference, these competitors offer naturally aspirated engines producing around 103 HP to 115 HP, along with more powerful turbocharged variants.
In its higher trims, the Sierra is expected to be equipped with Tata’s 1.5-litre direct-injection turbo-petrol engine. The version displayed at the Auto Expo was rated at 170 HP and 280 Nm of torque, although the company may offer different states of tune based on the variant and model positioning.
Currently, Tata Motors offers three petrol engines across its model range – a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated unit, a 1.2-litre turbocharged engine and a 1.2-litre direct-injection turbocharged motor. The introduction of the 1.5-litre NA and turbo-petrol engines will expand the brand’s petrol portfolio to five, providing a broader range of choices for buyers across segments.
By introducing a more affordable 1.5-litre NA option, Tata Motors aims to make the Sierra a more accessible product in the competitive midsize SUV space, while still offering performance-focused variants for buyers seeking higher power outputs.
More details regarding performance figures, fuel efficiency and pricing of the new engine options are expected to be revealed closer to the official launch of the Sierra and other upcoming Tata models.
