Honda begins India road testing of 0 Alpha electric SUV before launch

Honda Cars India has initiated pan-India road testing for its upcoming electric SUV, marking the beginning of real-world validation for the brand’s first battery-electric vehicle planned for the Indian market. The model, referred to globally as the Honda 0 Alpha, is expected to make its global debut during FY2026–27.

The prototype was originally showcased at the Japan Mobility Show 2025 and represents part of Honda’s broader electrification plans. With the testing programme now underway, the company will evaluate the vehicle under diverse Indian driving conditions before its eventual production and launch.

Testing Across Diverse Indian Conditions

The test programme will cover a variety of road environments across the country, including city traffic, highways and uneven road surfaces. Honda aims to analyse key parameters such as durability, ride quality, handling characteristics and overall reliability.

In addition to driving performance, the company will also study charging behaviour and everyday usability of the electric SUV under local conditions. The trials are expected to include exposure to India’s extreme climate variations, including high summer temperatures and monsoon conditions.

Takashi Nakajima, President and CEO of Honda Cars India, said the road testing phase is an important step in ensuring the vehicle meets the requirements of Indian customers and operating conditions.

India to Serve as Production Hub

Honda plans to manufacture the electric SUV at its Tapukara facility in Rajasthan. The company is expected to invest around Rs. 1200 crores to support EV production and related infrastructure at the plant.

Apart from catering to domestic demand, the India-built model is also intended for export markets. Japan is expected to be among the initial global markets to receive the vehicle once production begins.

The investment proposal was discussed earlier during meetings between Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma and Honda Cars India leadership, where the project was highlighted as part of the broader “Make in India for the World” initiative.

Honda’s Global EV Strategy Adjustments

Honda has recently reassessed some aspects of its global EV roadmap. Reports indicate that the company cancelled a larger electric SUV and sedan planned under the 0-Series lineup due to changing market dynamics and moderating EV demand in certain regions.

However, the company’s EV plans for India remain on track. The locally manufactured 0 Alpha is expected to form the foundation of Honda’s electric vehicle strategy in the country.
