Chery-JLR Freelander 8

Chery and Jaguar Land Rover’s joint venture has taken the wraps off the Freelander 8, marking the debut of the revived Freelander brand as a standalone lineup. The new SUV is derived from the recently showcased Concept 97 and will spearhead a broader product strategy that includes six models planned over the next five years.

The production-spec Freelander 8 carries forward several visual cues from its concept predecessor. Notable elements include the triangular glass motif, a nod to the original Freelander, and a bold, upright stance. However, the front fascia has evolved with the addition of functional air vents and rectangular detailing in place of the concept’s closed-off design.

Along the sides, the overall silhouette remains familiar, though conventional doors replace the concept’s more radical layout. Large dual-tone alloy wheels and prominent Freelander badging further reinforce its identity.

While the cabin has not been fully revealed, the company has confirmed key highlights. The Freelander 8 will feature a dashboard-spanning Mini LED display integrated into the windscreen area, capable of relaying navigation, weather and real-time vehicle data.

Seating is expected to prioritise comfort, with elevated front seats offering improved visibility and second-row “zero-gravity” seats designed for enhanced relaxation. A three-row, six-seat layout is likely.

Under the skin, the Freelander 8 is built on a new architecture that supports a range of electrified powertrains, including fully electric, plug-in hybrid and range-extender configurations. EV variants are expected to utilise an 800V electrical system, enabling faster charging and improved efficiency.

Technology will play a central role, with advanced driver assistance systems developed in collaboration with Huawei, including LiDAR-based sensing. The vehicle will also use a high-performance chipset from Qualcomm to manage onboard systems and connectivity features. A terrain management system is also part of the package, indicating some off-road capability.

The Freelander 8 is expected to make its market debut in China in the second half of 2026. A phased global rollout is anticipated thereafter, though specific timelines for other markets have not yet been confirmed.
