Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (HMSI) has commenced work on developing electric scooters for the Indian market. The move comes at a time when there is an increased concentration on the green technologies primarily to curb pollution across the major metros.

Honda’s higher executive confirms that the work regarding the electric scooters is being carried out at the company’s headquarters in Japan with inputs being taken from the Indian operations. While the automaker has a global experience in electric 2-wheelers, somehow, it feels it is quite a struggle to meet the expectations of Indian customers, especially when considering mass-market products.

Major challenges include deciding on the price, riding range and of course, the performance of the EV. The company is aiming at a range of 100 kms on a single charge and is yet to decide on the launch timeline of the electric scooters. The Japanese auto giant recently confirmed one new 2-wheeler launch and 18 upgrades for its existing products this FY.
