Hyundai has opened bookings for the fifth generation Elantra in the Indian car market. The Korean automaker will launch the new Hyundai Elantra in India on 13th August 2012, offering the vehicle in four variants – 1.6-litre diesel manual, 1.6-litre diesel automatic, 1.8-litre petrol manual and 1.8-litre petrol automatic. Both the manual and automatic gearbox are a 6-speed unit. Prices will start at Rs. 12.49 (est.) for the base 1.8-litre petrol variant and will rival the Volkswagen Jetta 1.4 TSI and Skoda Laura 1.8 TSI. The diesel Elantra will be priced at a premium of Rs. 1 lakh over the petrol variants.

The petrol engined Hyundai Elantra produces 147 BHP of power and 181 Nm of torque. The diesel engined Elantra produces 126 BHP of power and 265 Nm of torque. The diesel engine is from the Verna but the sixth gear is taller for better efficiency. The 2012 Hyundai Elantra boasts of a very exhaustive features list including six airbags, automatic headlamps, electronic stability control, hill hold control and vehicle stability management. Expect Hyundai to sell around 500 units of the Elantra every month with the vehicle being assembled at the automaker’s Chennai facility through CKD kits.

Hyundai has also started a teaser website here. This website tells you how you can book the new Elantra and also has a contest wherein people who book the car have a chance to win prizes. Booking amount for the new Elantra is Rs. 25,000/-. A teaser TV commercial has been revealed as well, which can be seen below.
