Kia confirms Seltos hybrid for India with launch expected by 2027
Kia has officially confirmed that the Seltos will receive a hybrid powertrain for the Indian market, marking a significant expansion of its midsize SUV lineup. According to the company, the model is expected to arrive between late 2026 and the first half of 2027. The hybrid system will be heavily localised to ensure competitive pricing, a key requirement in the segment.
While technical specifications are yet to be shared, industry sources suggest that the upcoming hybrid setup may be based on Kia’s 1.5-litre naturally aspirated engine. The Seltos already offers a hybrid option in global markets such as South Korea and the United States, although the India-spec version is expected to be adapted for localisation and cost efficiency.
Kia also indicated that another hybrid SUV will make its India debut before the Seltos hybrid arrives. This model is widely expected to be the Sorento, which would compete with higher-segment SUVs like the Toyota Fortuner and MG Gloster. The phased introduction reflects Kia’s broader hybrid strategy for India.
Component localisation will play a central role in determining the pricing of the Seltos hybrid. Batteries, motors, control electronics and inverters are all expected to be manufactured or sourced locally to keep costs in check. The current Seltos range spans from Rs. 11.25 lakh to above Rs. 20 lakh, and Kia aims to ensure the hybrid version stays within a competitive bracket.
The introduction of hybrid technology is aligned with Kia’s long-term goals. The company announced during its April 2025 investor briefing that it aims for hybrids to contribute at least 25 percent of its India sales by 2030. Additionally, upcoming CAFE 3 regulations are expected to provide greater compliance benefits to hybrid and electric models, making hybrids an important part of Kia’s future strategy.
