Unlike the Micro-Hybrid system, the Intelli-Hybrid will provide mild electric assistance

When we talk about SUVs in our country, there is one brand that can never be ignored. Mahindra has been leading the SUV movement in our country for a fair share of the past decade. Leading this charge for the company has been the Scorpio. One of Mahindra’s longest running SUVs, and its first product to be sold in the global market. Over its life span, which started in 2002, the Scorpio has gone through a multitude of changes and advancements. The latest one comes in the form of a new hybrid motor.

This however, is not the first time that a Mahindra Scorpio has been seen with a hybrid tag on its tailgate. The currently sold model also features Micro-Hybrid technology. But that is nothing more than a glorified engine stop-start system. Mahindra however, have been working on a proper hybrid engine for the Scorpio, which is expected to be launched in the coming months. The new system will provide mild electric assistance to the engine when called for.

The new technology, dubbed the Intelli-Hybrid, will be offered with the 2.2-litre diesel engine, and will come with brake energy recuperation, a larger capacity battery, and an integrated starter motor, which will act as an alternator, and an electric motor. The SUV however, will not be able to function on electric power alone, as the electric motor will merely act as an assistant.

The new engine will surely improve the Scorpio’s fuel efficiency figures by a significant number. The SUV will also benefit from the lower excise duty due to the NEMMP (National Electric Mobility Mission Plan), which provides incentives to electric and hybrid powered vehicles.
