Earlier this year, Mahindra had disclosed its plans of launching more products in the Indian market. The UV maker had four UVs under development to gain stronger foothold in unexplored segments. Out of them, Mahindra U321 has been spotted testing in the country multiple times in a heavily camouflaged state. It is expected that Mahindra U321 price will be kept significantly lower than the Toyota Innova Crysta.

There were a lot of rumours about its positioning, seating and features which have been partially put to rest now as some other details have also leaked. Power will be drawn from a 1.6-litre diesel unit from the mFalcon series which has been jointly developed with SsangYong. The 4-cylinder engine is said to develop 125 HP of power and 305 Nm of torque. It is also being reported that the MPV will be positioned at a slight premium over the Maruti Ertiga.

The Maruti Ertiga is priced from Rs. 6.55 lakhs to Rs. 10.68 lakhs (ex-showroom, Mumbai) and significantly undercuts the Toyota Innova Crysta which retails from Rs. 15 lakhs (ex-showroom, Mumbai). The U321’s pricing will make it compete against the similarly-priced Honda BR-V and Renault Lodgy. The Mahindra S201, which is an upcoming compact SUV based on SsangYong Tivoli, will also borrow the 1.6-litre diesel engine from the U321.

The U321 is a full-sized MPV which is expected to be launched in 2018 in 7 and 8 seater variants. It sits on a monocoque platform and comes equipped with features such as touchscreen infotainment unit, automatic climate control and LED DRLs. It is also likely that Mahindra will showcase the production-spec U321 at the upcoming 2018 Auto Expo in February.
