Mahindra has sent out a press release stating it will launch the electric version of the Verito within one year from now. This means the REVA powered Verito sedan will go on sale in this fiscal year itself. The company has made this announcement on the back of good initial response to the Mahindra e2o, their latest electric car which was launched just last month. Mahindra is almost ready with electric versions of the Maxximo and Gio. The company has developed a prototype of the Verito electric, which was showcased at the 2012 Auto Expo. A total investment of Rs. 150 crore has gone into the development of these three electric vehicles.

The Mahindra Verito Electric will feature a 29 kW AC motor which has 100 kms of range. It takes 6 hours to get fully charged while quick charge takes 75 minutes. Top speed is 86 km/hr but performance is best for city driving conditions as acceleration is not the strongest point of this car. However the Verito Electric will offer an easy and hassle free driving experience with zero noise and vibration from the eco conscious powertrain. Mahindra is also working on bringing electric technology to its 2-wheeler range.

Mahindra has extensively invested in electric technology, post the acquisition of REVA. The company is taking time to adapt electric powertrains to various vehicles as they are different in many regards. All these vehicles are heaveir than the e2o and thus it’s not simple copy and paste. The biggest hurdle faced by electric cars is the lack of susidies which pushes prices northwards. While the Mahindra e2o is offered at Rs. 5.96 lakhs (on-road, Delhi), it is much pricier in other states, some of which don’t even offer any sort of subsidy to the 2-door environment friendly car.
