Just 2 months after its launch, the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza has beaten the Mahindra Bolero to become the second best-selling SUV in the country.

Maruti Vitara Brezza Review
The Vitara Brezza was launched earlier this year in March

After its S-Cross received some flak for looking too much like an ordinary hatchback, Maruti released a second contender in the SUV segment, the Vitara Brezza. The Vitara looks very much SUV like with its flared wheel arches, tall stance and the in-your-face front. Since its launch, the Brezza seems to have worked its magic for Maruti. In the month of April 2016, the Vitara Brezza outsold the Mahindra Bolero to take the number two spot on the Urban SUV sales charts.

The Mahindra Bolero has started showing its age now. The tough old Spartan first lost to the Hyundai Creta, giving up its number one spot. The launch of the Brezza spelled more trouble for the Bolero as the Brezza not only overtook the Bolero, but has managed to sell 2047 units more than it. The Bolero will need more than just a facelift if Mahindra wants to re-capture the SUV summit. The old boxy design with the dated interiors cannot compete against the new-age goodies and the striking looks offered by the Creta and Brezza.

The Mahindra Bolero should still manage to stay relevant in the rural parts of the country given its rugged attributes and off-roading capabilities owing to its 4-wheel drive system. The Bolero also comes in other forms like the Bolero pick-up which is doing well in the pick-up trucks segment. However, a major revamp will be necessary if it wants to stay relevant in the SUV segment.

The Maruti Vitara Brezza on the other hand is right up the Hyundai Creta’s rear with 7832 cars sold last month. With about 68 units between them (Hyundai sold 7900 Cretas), the Vitara Brezza may very well take the lead in the coming months. Maruti’s brand image, coupled with its dealership network has helped the Brezza record this impressive growth in sales. The Brezza has been further rumoured to get a petrol variant by August-September this year.
