MG Motors, owned by SAIC, has started testing two electric vehicles near its plant in Gujarat. According to sources, the carmaker is testing its fully electric SUV, Roewe eRX5 and an electric small car SAIC E100. It is also reported that both the cars are left-hand drive vehicles and have been imported from China for determining their range in Indian climatic and road conditions.

The company’s officials also confirm the same. The electric SUV Roewe eRX5 has a range of up to 425 kms on a single charge while the small car SAIC E100 can go up to 155 kms on a single charge. The latter could rival the Mahindra e2o Plus if launched in India.

The small car comes powered by a single motor that is capable of producing 110 Nm of torque. Maximum attainable top speed is 100 km/hr while the EV takes 7.5 hours for a full charge. On the other hand, the Roewe eRX5 comes with a fast charging system and can be charged up to 80% in just 40 minutes. The SUV has a top speed of 135 km/hr.

MG Motors is currently limiting vehicle testing to parts of Western India only. Based on the outcome of this phase of testing, the company will look forward to deploy the test mules in other parts of the country for testing. Over the next 6 years in India, the automaker has lined up investments worth over Rs. 5000 crores with a target of achieving 80% localisation in its vehicles.
