Mitsubishi India has launched the Pajero Sport AT at Rs. 23.55 lakhs (ex-showroom, Delhi). The SUV now comes with a 5-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters. The Pajero Sport AT is a rear-wheel drive SUV and is only available with a 4×2 layout, which makes it Rs. 25,000/- cheaper than the regular 4×4 manual variant. The price for the Pajero Sport 4×4 MT has now been increased by Rs. 30,000/-, revised to Rs. 23.8 lakhs. The updated model also gets a new multi-information display and chrome finished front grille.

The carmaker expects considerable growth in volumes with the availability of the automatic variant as the demand is quite high for automatics in this segment currently. Powering the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport is the same 2.5-litre diesel engine that produces 178 PS of maximum power and 350 Nm of peak torque for the 4×2 version, which is 50 Nm less than the 4×4. The Pajero Sport AT is lighter and more fuel efficient than the 4×4 model. It boasts a ground clearance of 215 mm and comes with five colour options.

The Mitsubishi Pajero Sport was initially imported in India via the CBU route. Eventually the carmaker started local assembly of the SUV for competitive pricing. To push the sales, Mitsubishi first launched the Anniversary Edition of the Pajero Sport with new features and recently introduced another limited edition model that comes with DVD system, chiller box and dual-tone colour scheme. The Pajero Sport Automatic competes with the likes of Toyota Fortuner, Hyundai Santa Fe, Ford Endeavour and SsangYong Rexton. The Pajero Sport had limited group of buyers who are mostly off-road enthusiasts but now the convenience seekers have another option in this segment, which is expected to lift the fortunes of Mitsubishi in India to some extent.
