Traffic and Mumbai roads are a match made in heaven because no matter what time of the day it is, our roads users are always stuck in traffic. Congested lanes, uneven highways, encroachments and potholes are the major causes of traffic which are further complemented by unruly drivers.
In an attempt to ease the traffic situation in Mumbai, the Mumbai Traffic Police is implementing new rules which are as follows –
- No heavy vehicles to be allowed to enter Mumbai between 8-11 AM and 5-9 PM
- Heavy vehicles incl. luxury buses completely banned in South Mumbai from 7 AM to 12 Midnight
- Heavy vehicles carrying essential goods will be allowed
- Ambulances, school buses, Govt buses allowed to operate
- Heavy vehicles banned on Eastern Freeway throughout the day except buses
- Heavy vehicles can be parked in designated Pay and Park spots; roadside parking not allowed
- Only two water tankers can be parked on roads near water supply units
While the traffic police is aiming to reduce congestion with these new rules, the All India Transport Motor Congress stated that such rules will lead to more corruption and will affect work in many parts of the city. They also stated that trucks are on the roads for important duties and not for leisure activities like cars.
Considering the kind of population and vehicle density that we have in Mumbai, it remains to be seen how effective these new rules will be.
