Skoda Superb diesel to make a comeback in India in its new generation avatar

Skoda India is poised to make a significant move in the Indian automotive market by reintroducing diesel engine options with its upcoming generation of the Superb. Petr Janeba, Head of International Sales at Skoda Auto, has confirmed this development, marking a strategic shift for the brand in response to evolving consumer preferences.

The decision to bring back diesel engines comes after Skoda quietly discontinued the Superb in India last year due to the implementation of BS6 stage-2 emissions norms. With plans to test the waters, Skoda intends to reintroduce diesel-powered Superb via the Completely Built-Up (CBU) route, with the first batch expected to arrive later this year.

This move represents a departure from Skoda’s previous stance, where the company had opted to discontinue diesel engines globally as it perceived a shift away from diesel-powered vehicles. However, with a robust demand for diesel cars, especially in the SUV segment, despite stringent emission norms, Skoda aims to cater to this segment of the market while adhering to regulatory standards.

Under its ‘India 2.0’ strategy, Skoda has been performing well in the Indian market but has been offering only petrol engine options across its lineup. The decision to reintroduce diesel engines is likely a response to the persistent demand for diesel cars in certain segments.

The 2024 Superb, which made its global debut in November last year, offers six engine options internationally, including three petrol, two diesel and a Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV). However, when it arrives in India, it is expected to feature two engine options: a locally manufactured 2.0-litre turbo petrol unit and a fully-imported diesel trim.

Who all are excited to see diesels back in Skoda cars? We hope they get a good response with the diesel powertrain and introduce the diesel engine options across their lineup including Volkswagen cars.
