Skoda Rapid Onyx Price
New auto box will keep the Rapid fresh in the market till its replacement arrives

Skoda Auto India is poised to launch the Rapid TSI with a torque converter box in India by September. The car will get a 6-speed auto gearbox, which will mark the end of the life cycle for the seven-speed DSG transmission here that was discontinued before the BS6 era.

The sedan was recently updated with a new powertrain that saw two engines, i.e, the 1.2-litre turbo petrol and 1.5-litre diesel, get replaced with a sole 1.0-litre 3-cylinder TSI petrol motor.

However, the smaller motor produces a healthy 110 HP and 175 Nm of torque and is mated to a 6-speed manual transmission. Prices start from Rs. 7.49 lakhs (ex-showroom, India).

Having gotten rid of the diesel versions, Skoda is aiming to appeal to a greater audience by introducing an automatic version. The decision to introduce a simple 6-speed torque converter box for the Rapid TSI AT might have been made to keep things simple and most importantly, cost-effective.

Expect the Rapid TSI AT to command a premium over the manual option, but still be priced aggressively, much like the manual. It will take on the likes of the VW Vento, the new Honda City and Hyundai Verna.

Skoda is also working on a new C-segment sedan underpinned by the latest MQB A0 IN platform. It is scheduled to be launched by the end of 2021. Skoda is likely to position the new sedan above the Rapid.
