Sony Mobility Vision-S 02
The car shares the same platform as the Vision-S 01 electric sedan

Sony has showcased the Vision-S 02 at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas

Sony Group Corporation has exhibited the Vision-S 02 electric SUV prototype at CES 2022 which shares the underpinnings of the Vision-S 01 electric sedan that debuted at the same event 2 years ago.

Visually, both cars seem the same, with the Vision-S 02 looking like a taller version of the Vision-S 01 and the numbers do not lie. Using the same EV/cloud platform both cars are 4895 mm long and have a wheelbase of 3030 mm.

However, the electric SUV is 30 mm wider the the 01 at 1930 mm and 200 mm taller at 1650 mm. It has more ground clearance, can seat 3 more people (7 in total) and this is heavier by 130 kg at 2480 kg.

But there are more similarities than one would believe. For example, both cars use a 200 kW (268 BHP) electric motor on each axle, have all-wheel drive, and double wishbone suspension (front and rear).

Due to the additional heft, the Sony Vision-S 02 will have a lower 180 km/hr top speed (the sedan can hit 240 km/hr) and also rides on 20-inch wheels instead of 21-inch rims of the 01.

The car will soon be seen on the roads in Europe

Inside, both electric vehicles (EVs) share the same dashboard that is made up of multiple wide display screens. Further there are individual rear-seat displays in the electric SUV.

Features such as gesture and voice commands, customisable display and sounds, OTA, and the ability to synchronise the car’s settings by linking the vehicle to the cloud using mobile communication will be present along with 360 Reality Audio with seat speakers, fully integrated digital video service and gaming capabilities.

The EV will come with a whole host of safety systems including technology for real time recognition of the surroundings through sensors including CMOS image sensors and LiDAR sensors.

In addition, the EVs will have Level 2+ advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), which Sony is testing on public roads in Europe and remote operation technology. Sony has been testing the Vision-S 01 on public roads from December 2020 and it began 5G driving tests in April last year.

Finally, Sony has announced that it will establish an operating company “Sony Mobility Inc.” in the spring of 2022 (March-June), through which the company intends to explore entry into the EV market.
