Suzuki showcased a collection of concept cars at the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show. The theme for the company is based on the slogan “Small cars for a big future” and that is where the future of the company lies, both in terms of design and actual products. The list of concept cars unveiled include Crosshiker, X-Lander, Hustler, Hustler Coupe, iV-4 concept and the ET4D. Noting that all the concepts are basically crossovers, one can assume Suzuki to bring in many production vehicles of this type.
The Suzuki Crosshiker is a compact, 3-door crossover roughly the size of a city car but with an elevated height. Suzuki describes this to have evolved out of the 2011 Suzuki Regina and the Crosshiker uses a next-generation lightweight platform. The total weight of the car is restricted to 810 kgs and is powered by a newly developed 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder engine. The dimensions of the car are 3650 mm in length, 1695 mm in width and 1540 mm in height. The production version will be much less flamboyant than this concept design.
The Suzuki X-Lander is a 4-wheel drive hybrid vehicle that is basically intended for city usage but can occasionally handle off-beat paths as well. Based on the Jimny 4×4 SUV, the X-Lander features a 1.3-litre gasoline engine mated to an automatically controlled manual transmission and an electric motor. As well as increasing the efficiency, the electric motor is said to allocate torque to all four wheels to boost the X-Lander’s low speed off-road capabilities. The open-top design and the stripped-out futuristic interiors on this concept will not make it to the production vehicle without significant changes.
The 2-tone orange and white painted Suzuki Hustler is boxy in shape and the company sees its design as a challenge to a new genre of cars. The vehicle has plenty of distinctive styling touches, with a sloping roofline and boxy stance. The car features a comfortable, roomy interior but the downside is that it is not destined for production. Derived from the Hustler, the Hustler coupe will go on sale in Japan. It features a 3-cylinder petrol engine and can be described as a mini-crossover. The iV-4 concept is a compact SUV which was showcased at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show and is all set to debut in Japan. The ET4D is a concept electro vehicle for seniors equipped with various utility features.
