Tata Punch CNG production has commenced, launch soon

Tata Motors is gearing up to expand its CNG portfolio with the launch of the much awaited Tata Punch CNG. The production of the CNG variant has commenced, which means that the micro SUV will soon hit the showrooms ahead of the festive season.

The Tata Punch CNG would be the company’s fourth product to receive factory-fitted CNG after the Tiago, Tigor and Altroz. It is expected to come with a sunroof, a feature which is not available in its petrol powered counterpart yet.

Under the hood, the Punch CNG will retain the 1.2-litre, three-cylinder engine that powers its petrol variant. It produces 86 BHP and 113 Nm of torque in petrol mode. However, with CNG these figures will drop to 77 HP and 97 Nm.

The Punch CNG will get the same dual-cylinder setup that made its debut with the Altroz CNG. This layout allows optimum boot space with two small cylinders instead of a huge single cylinder that eats into the boot space. The 60-litre tank is split into two 30-litre cylinders. Both cylinders are placed under the boot floor. You will also be able to start the car directly in CNG mode.

The exterior design of the Tata Punch CNG will remain unchanged, except for the addition of the ‘i-CNG’ badge on the tailgate. The interior too will remain unchanged offering the same layout and features, except for the range topping variant that is likely to get a sunroof.

Pricing for the CNG trims will be around Rs. 50,000/- to Rs. 1 lakh higher compared to the regular Punch, depends on variant to variant. The Punch CNG will compete directly with the Hyundai Exter which also comes with a factory fitted CNG.
