Tesla is likely to introduce a new variant of its electric SUV lineup in India in the coming days, as part of its efforts to strengthen its presence in the market. The upcoming model is expected to be the Tesla Model Y L, a long-wheelbase version of the Model Y featuring a three-row seating configuration.
The Model Y L, which was first unveiled in China, is designed to offer increased cabin space and a six-seat layout, catering to buyers seeking more practicality than the standard five-seat version currently on sale in India.
The Model Y L introduces a stretched wheelbase and an additional row of seats, making it more suitable for family-oriented usage. It is expected to be imported from Tesla’s Shanghai Gigafactory, which currently serves as the production hub for this variant.
Tesla already sources the standard Model Y for India from the same facility, and the addition of the L variant is likely to expand its portfolio without requiring new local manufacturing investments.
The introduction of a new variant comes as Tesla looks to improve its performance in India. The company’s initial market entry has been relatively subdued, with limited volumes and slower-than-expected adoption.
High import duties, which can range between 70 and 110 percent, continue to impact pricing and competitiveness in the Indian market. These factors have contributed to modest sales numbers, prompting the company to explore ways to make its lineup more appealing.
Globally, Tesla has been focusing on incremental updates and new variants to sustain demand, rather than introducing entirely new models. The Model Y L fits into this strategy, offering added practicality while leveraging an existing platform.
The variant has already been introduced in China and confirmed for select international markets, indicating a broader rollout plan beyond its initial launch region.
For India, the Model Y L could help Tesla target a niche within the premium EV segment by offering a larger, more versatile SUV format. However, its success will likely depend on pricing, given the continued reliance on imports and associated duties.
While an official announcement is awaited, the expected launch suggests Tesla is gradually expanding its offerings as it evaluates long-term opportunities in the country.
