2018 Volkswagen Polo Front
The sixth-gen model was not introduced in India

Volkswagen is evaluating the possibility of launching the seventh-gen Polo in India by around 2023 or 2024, while the sixth-generation model’s introduction here has been ruled out.

Yet to be unveiled, the next-gen Polo for India would be based on the MQB-A0-IN platform and the carmaker would have to revise the global model to make it conform to the 4-metre length regulation in India.

Volkswagen Passenger Cars India, Brand Director, Ashish Gupta, has recently stated that with the MQB-A0-IN platform, which is very amenable to products like the Polo, it is definitely possible (to bring the next-gen Polo to India).

Bringing the new Polo to India is very much important for Volkswagen, for the current model has been on sale for over a decade and is still a core product in its lineup.

However, it is without a doubt that the automaker has currently set its sights on making its SUV portfolio stronger than ever under its ‘SUVW’ strategy, meaning the hatchback segment does not top its list of priorities.

That is not to say that other products will be alienated, however, for it has promised that the successor to the Vento will be unveiled by the end of the year.

Thus, it might take another 2-3 years for the seventh-gen Volkswagen Polo to be introduced in the market and be introduced it will, for Volkswagen seems to be buoyed by one main factor witnessed in the premium hatchback segment.

At present, cars in the segment the Polo competes in have seen their asking price get dearer over time, which, Ashish Gupta states “does help the business case”.

It might not be surprising, then, to see the asking price of the top variant of the seventh-gen Polo cost upwards of Rs. 11 lakhs (ex-showroom).
