Volvo S90 discontinued in India as brand shifts focus to electric SUVs

Volvo has officially discontinued its S90 luxury sedan in the Indian market, marking the end of its sedan offerings in the country. The model has been removed from Volvo India’s official website and the brand’s portfolio now consists solely of SUVs.

A Well-Equipped Sedan Now Phased Out

The S90, known for its elegant design and premium features, was offered in a single B5 trim with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder mild-hybrid petrol engine producing 250 HP. It came fully loaded with luxury features such as a 360-degree camera, four-zone climate control, massaging and ventilated front seats, air suspension and a high-end 1400W Bowers & Wilkins sound system. Despite its strong feature list, the S90 struggled to match the popularity and technological edge of rivals like the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and BMW 5 Series.

Declining Sales and Outdated Package

Launched in its facelifted avatar in October 2021, the S90 was locally assembled and priced at Rs. 68.25 lakhs (ex-showroom). However, with its competition receiving major updates and broader powertrain options, the S90 lagged behind in market appeal. As a result, it failed to generate significant sales in recent times, prompting Volvo to discontinue the model.

Global Updates Not Confirmed for India

Globally, Volvo gave the S90 a second facelift in April 2024, featuring updated styling, a larger touchscreen and improved mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains. In March, the brand also revealed the ES90, an all-electric sedan with a claimed range of up to 700 km. However, neither the facelifted S90 nor the ES90 has been confirmed for the Indian market.

Volvo’s Shift Towards Electric SUVs

Volvo India’s current strategy focuses on SUVs, especially electric ones. The company is preparing to launch the compact EX30 electric SUV by the end of 2025, with local assembly under consideration. Following that, the flagship EX90 electric SUV is expected to arrive in 2026. With this pivot, Volvo is clearly doubling down on the growing SUV and EV segments in India.
