2013 Isuzu MU-7 India

Isuzu has silently entered the Indian market without making any official announcements but thanks to our reader Sivakumar Janakiraman, we have got all the details of the Isuzu MU-7. The Japanese automaker is test marketing their products in the South, before investing heavily in marketing and dealership expansion. Isuzu is not new to India and has been supplying engines to Hindustan Motors for ages now. The company has launched two products in the Indian market, the Isuzu D-Max pick-up truck (in single and double cab variants) and the Isuzu MU-7 SUV.

The Isuzu D-Max is priced at Rs. 6.89 lakhs and Rs. 8.10 lakhs for the single and double cab versions respectively. The Isuzu MU-7 is priced at Rs. 24.18 lakhs (all prices ex-showroom, Hyderabad). The high price difference between the pick-up and SUV is due to the import duty, which is higher on passenger vehicles. These vehicles are imported as CBUs from Thailand and commercial diesel vehicles are charged at just 10% while the MU-7 is subjected to over 100% excise duty. Thus, even though the MU-7 is based on the D-Max, it costs drastically more.

The dealer in Hyderabad (Mahavir Isuzu) has started taking bookings for the MU-7. The initial booking amount is Rs. 51,000/- and the Isuzu MU-7 commands a waiting period of 6 months, as Isuzu has allotted only 60 units for 2013. Only the 2-wheel drive version (rear-wheel drive) is available currently and the 4-wheel drive version will come after 2 years. However the MU-7 offered is in top model trim and is available in 3 colours – white, black and silver.

The Isuzu MU-7 is powered by a 3.0-litre 4-cylinder diesel engine which produces 163 PS of power at 3600 RPM and 360 Nm of torque between 1800-2800 RPM. Weirdly though, this engine is not BS4 compliant but only BS3 compliant. It is mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox. Performance is decent and 0 – 100 km/hr takes 10.7 seconds while the top speed is 175 km/hr. This 7-seater SUV has a massive wheelbase of 3050 mm and weighs 1900 kgs.

We are not too sure about the ride quality as this ladder frame SUV uses leaf springs at the rear. ABS, EBD, dual front airbags, rear entertainment system and manual AC is offered on the MU-7. Clearly the Isuzu MU-7 doesn’t come across as a very value for money offering with the features list not bettering its chief rivals like the Toyota Fortuner and SsangYong Rexton W. The company plans to set up a manufacturing plant in Andhra Pradesh soon.

I guess the commercial version may find takers from the buyers looking for Gurka or Thar !!!

  • Kedar

6 & 8 lakh for pick ups is mouth watering prices. The road presence is better than Thar and Gurkha.

Question is will these vehicle be sold as private number plate ??

  • Rohit

Interiors are dated, similar to the Logan cabs, engine also not BS4 compliant which means the vehocle will not be registered inside th metropolitan areas. Hard to taste success in this market.

  • The D-max Pik-up is priced good and has potential to do good in our market. The Isuzu Mu-7 could be a good SUV but not suitable for that price margin. But again their hands are tied up against our import policy. Maybe a little later, after localization applies, these prices would fall.

I think Mitsubishi has considerable share in ISUZU..

Mitsubishi has far better brand acceptance compare to ISUZU which for Indian prospective is a trucking company only. Mitsubishi already has manufacturing tie up with HM, they already had existing setup for making Pajero, though it was not highly localized but still they had platform to build. Mitsubishi at price point of 25L had better brand value compare to market leader Fortuner

So, why did they pushed ISUZU to start from 0 in a market which they already had a good brand value and manufacturing tie ups ??

Purely from business point a view, would not it be better to buy out HM plant and bring their own line up as local product rather than investing, i guess a full thousand cr for ISUZU to start from zero, even as a brand it self ??

  • Makarand,Pune

So allmost all Japenese brands are here except Mazda,Subaru who else?

    • Makarand, Subaru won’t enter India anytime soon. Mazda is there in commercial sector with Swaraj.

ISUZ is doing the same thing Like Toyota Launch Fortuner in India when they stop selling this in westeran counteries. Isuzu is also stop Old model In Australia,USA,UK & Canada. Now they launch Old Dmax in India
.They launch New Dmax Modell in western countries which is Loadid with Quality and feathers. Indian Dmax id nothing Inforent Of New Dmax

    • Virander, I guess they did it to maintain pricing.

  • Nishanth

I feel that the Mu-7 is extremely overpriced. At more than 23lakhs ex-showroom price we are looking at around INR 26 to 27 lakhs. It is mentioned in the article that Isuzu wants to launch these two models as trial before heavy investments in India operations. But who will buy this Mu-7 for almost 28 or 29lakhs on-road price when we have many other modern SUVs in the market. The interior of the Mu-7 looks terribly basic for this price range and it is similar to the one in Force One SUV. This is not the way Isuzu!
This SUV would have been a decent hit if it was priced like the Force One. I also doubt that, the Isuzu Mu-7 may have some design connections with the force one since many parts look kinda similar. Also the dashboard has resemblance with the Force one…..
But I feel the pick-up (D-max) is priced reasonably well and if it offers 4*4 on any of its variants it would be a great offroader and a nice alternative to Tata Xenon…

  • Nishanth

I also have one more doubt. As it has mentioned in the article that the D-max is being imported in a commercial category and thus attracting only 10% duty. The d-max pick-up can be registered as a private vehicle or it will be sold only for commercial registration (yellow number plate)?

    • Nishanth, yes a private buyer can register it.

  • Ravi

Hi Faisal. I have heard that there are no deliveries for D-Max till December(at-least). Can you please confirm this.

    Thank you.

    • Ravi, not sure but yes they have very limited quantity available for India initially.
