2014 BMW X5

BMW India has silently launched a new base variant for the X5 luxury SUV called xDrive x30d ‘Expedition’, priced at Rs. 64.9 lakhs (ex-showroom). The new base variant is a healthy Rs. 6 lakhs cheaper than the standard 2014 X5 that was launched earlier this year at a price of Rs. 70.9 lakhs (ex-showroom, Delhi). However, the Expedition variant does lose out on several features compared to the top end model (Design Pure Experience), but retains the same mechanicals and power outputs under the hood.

On the outside, changes to the BMW X5 Expedition include the B and C-pillars sporting regular matte finish, instead of the black high gloss look. The titanium-finished front grille bars and the decorative side moulding on the bumper finished in brushed aluminium are now painted black. The chrome finished exhaust and stainless steel guards all around the SUV have been omitted from the features list of the base variant. In terms of equipment, the Adaptive LED headlights have been replaced by Bi-Xenon headlights with four LED DRL light rings. The LED fog lights have been omitted in favour of regular ones.

Inside the cabin, the Expedition variant of the BMW X5 misses out on features such as launch control, electric seats with lumbar support, third row folding seats and the heating/ventilation console with integrated cupholders. The wood finish on the dashboard and doors has been limited to the American Oak trim only. In terms of gadgetry, the base X5 loses out on the 600-Watt Harman Kardon audio system with 16 speakers, BMW apps and navigation. The 26 cm colour display screen with iDrive Touch and handwriting recognition as well as DVD drive have also been given a miss.

Mechanically the new base X5 Expedition is powered by the same 3.0-litre 6-cylinder diesel engine that produces 258 BHP of power and 560 Nm of torque, paired to an 8-speed automatic transmission and sends power to all four wheels via BMW’s xDrive all-wheel drive system. The 8-speed automatic though is no more a Sports unit and misses out on paddle shifters. BMW brings the X5 via the CKD route and assembles the SUV at its Chennai plant in the country. With a comprehensive price tag, the new X5 Expedition will be competing against the Audi Q7 3.0 TDI in the segment that is priced at Rs. 61 lakhs (ex-showroom, Delhi).
