Suzuki has recalled 1.09 lakh units of the Swift worldwide, with almost half of the recalled units being in Japan. The reason for recall is a defect, which could lead to petrol leakage. The reason for this leakage is the rubber fuel filler hose being inadequately connected, with four cases being reported till date. The recall affects cars manufactured between September 2011 and April 2012. All these cars are manufactured in Japan and exported to Europe, Australia and Mexico.

Maruti Suzuki has clarified that this recall does not affect the Indian Swift. The company has heavily localized the Swift for the Indian market and it uses very little imported parts and components. Currently the Maruti Suzuki Swift attracts a good waiting period, due to the high demand it attracts in the Indian market. Currently there are very few cars which offer as good a package as the Swift. Just last month, the Swift overtook the Alto to become the highest selling car in the Indian market.

Powered by both petrol and diesel engines, Maruti Suzuki sells 8 diesel Swifts for every 2 petrol Swifts. A rumour has been floating of the company considering the launch of the Swift Sport in the Indian market. The Indian Swift Sport will not be similar to the one sold internationally as the company will customize it for the Indian market. The Indian Swift Sport is likely to be powered by the 1.4-litre K14 petrol engine from the Ertiga or the 1.6-litre M16 petrol engine from the SX4.
