Hyundai will be shelving its 800cc engine that does duty on the Eon, courtesy it not being able to meet the stringent BS6 emission norms.

The entry-level Hyundai hatchback runs on two petrol engines, the smaller 800cc variant that produces 56 HP of power and another is the 69 HP, 1.0-litre Kappa unit. The smaller 800cc mill, being the entry ticket to Hyundai family, sees most of the sales primarily due to its low price point.

More tight BS6 emission norms will be kicking in from April 2020, and this Hyundai’s 800cc powertrain is set to be a victim of it. Hyundai also has confirmed it will not be working on a new and a cleaner version of this 800cc engine as it may prove to be a costly affair and hence comes the decision to discontinue the engine.

Hyundai will, however, be updating the Eon around the same time and is likely to name it the ‘Santro’. Hyundai will be reviving the brand Santro as it is the car that’s more popular than the Eon as it marked Hyundai’s entry into the Indian market, way back in the 90s.
