Euro NCAP recently crash tested the 2018 Maruti Swift which is currently on sale in few of the European countries. The Swift is sold in two variants in the European markets – Standard variant and the Safety pack variant. Euro NCAP crash tested both the variants and the results could have been better considering the made-in-India Volkswagen Polo with dual airbags scored 4 stars in Global NCAP tests. Both the Swift models tested were equipped with six airbags which are standard on the car while the Safety Pack variant adds emergency braking to the vehicle.

The standard variant scored 3 star rating in the crash test and among the adult occupant safety, the Swift scored 83 percent and 75 percent in the child safety department. The safety pack variant scored a 4 star rating and among the adult occupant safety, the Swift scored 88 percent and 75 percent in the child safety department.

The frontal offset test revealed that the passenger compartment of the Swift remained stable. The readings indicated good level of protection on the knees and femurs for both the driver as well as the passenger. In the full-width rigid barrier test, protection for both the driver’s as well as the rear seat passenger’s chest was marginal while the Swift scored maximum points in both the side barrier test and the side pole impact, protecting critical parts of the body.

The Suzuki Swift exhibited good protection against whiplash injuries in the event of a rear-end collision in tests conducted on the front seats and head restraints. However, a geometric assessment of the rear seats indicated poor whiplash protection for occupants in those seating positions.

Maruti Suzuki is yet to launch the third generation Swift in the Indian market but is expected to do it at the 2018 Auto Expo. The India model will have inferior structural rigidity while also being equipped with a maximum of two airbags and thus the safety rating is expected to be less than the European model.
