The new Wagon R gets major design tweaks but the tall profile remains intact

Maruti’s popular hatchback gets a major facelift and is priced from Rs. 4.19 lakhs. The new Wagon R gets changes to its design and tweaks to the interior along with a more powerful 1.2-litre K12 petrol motor. The new Wagon R is based on the Heartect platform which also underpins the cars like the Maruti Swift and the Maruti Ignis.

The Wagon R looks more grown up and mature. Maruti seems to have done a good job of updating the design without changing the signature ‘tall-boy’ stance. The front is dominated by large and squarish bubble-like headlights. The grille is sleeker than the outgoing car and is dominated by a chrome strip with Maruti logo atop it. It also features a dual-tone bumper design with 3-slat air dam with foglight housings on either side. At the back, the Wagon R features vertically oriented tail-lights.

Inside the cabin, the top-spec 2019 Maruti Wagon R gets a new SmartPlay Studio infotainment system, which is its first time to be getting the feature. It will let the driver and the occupants get updates on the weather or news, locate nearest eateries and also listen to music. The interior layout does not look too different from the existing car. Wagon R also features Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity options. The centre AC vents are tweaked slightly. The interiors get the beige-black theme and the floating centre console also houses the gearstick.

On the safety front, all variants of the Wagon R get ABS with EBD, speed limit warning and a driver-side airbag. The VXi and ZXi variants come with dual airbags.

The new Wagon R measures 3655 mm in length, 1620 mm in width and 1675 mm in height. Its wheelbase is 2435 mm and the car comes fitted with a 32-litre fuel tank. The car weighs 805-845 kgs, making it 50-65 kgs lighter than the outgoing Wagon R. The wider stance has allowed Maruti to maximise the cabin and boot space with the latter being the best-in-class.

The Maruti Wagon R is offered with a 1.0-litre 3-cylinder petrol engine that puts out 67 BHP of power and 90 Nm of torque, while the 1.2-litre 4-cylinder engine produces 83 BHP and 113 Nm of torque. The Wagon R will come in three variants – LXi, VXi and ZXi. The base LXi variant will be solely offered with the 1.0-litre engine option. The VXi variant will be offered with both the engine options while the ZXi will be offered only with the 1.2-litre motor. AMT automatic will be offered in VXi and ZXi trims. The new Wagon R comes with 6 paint shade options namely Superior White, Silky Silver, Magma Grey, Autumn Orange, Nutmeg Brown and Poolside Blue. The Wagon R takes on the likes of the Hyundai Santro and Tata Tiago.
