Headed by ex-designer Chris Bangle, the current design theme on BMW cars were developed in the late 1990s and early 2000s and has evolved on those lines. However, with a similar styling theme BMW vehicles do tend lose out on exclusivity, which the company plans to offer on its next generation of cars. As per a recent report, the next generation 1, 3, 5 and 7-Series will be visually different from each other with a sense of exclusivity on offer. Karim Habib, BMW’s current design director stated that every model will have a little world of its own sporting a more distinctive styling.

Habib further said that BMW will use the new headlamp technology involving LED lamps to give each of the sedans a different look, while the signature double-kidney grille is more likely to get larger. The automaker’s flagship sedan the 7-Series is scheduled for a generation change next year and will be one of the first cars to get the distinctive design language that will use slim headlights and a larger double-kidney grille that will offer greater road presence.

The use of new LED technology on the next generation BMW 5-Series scheduled in 2016 will depend upon how the cost of LED technology develops during that period. The absence or presence of the new LED technology will be major deciding factor in the design direction of the next generation model, Habib further stated. Even though design has not been BMW’s strong point, the new design direction definitely looks promising.
