Maruti Suzuki had started testing the Wagon R EV long time back. The test mule has been spotted testing multiple times in India. Now that the future of electric mobility is here, Maruti is preparing to launch their range of EVs starting next year.

The automobile giant had introduced a premium network of dealership Nexa a few years back. Maruti now plans to introduce all its electric vehicles via the Nexa dealership network in India. The company already has around 250 dealerships across the country and plans to cross 300 service outlets by the end of this year.

Maruti is also working on developing a battery plant in India. The plant will manufacture Lithium Ion batteries from 2020. Heavy localisation of parts and batteries will help the carmaker price their electric vehicles aggressively. Otherwise electric car prices are not feasible in the current scenario.

The first EV to be rolled out from Maruti is expected to be the Wagon R based electric car that has been spotted on test. The carmaker will later introduce more models. Maruti is developing new products including EVs and hybrids with their new joint venture with Toyota.

We can expect the electric cars from Maruti to be priced above Rs. 8 lakhs. It makes sense to sell EVs via Nexa network since customers will expect a premium experience at this price point.
