The Audi e-tron, Maruti Suzuki WagonR EV, Tata Altroz EV and the Jaguar I-Pace are some of the upcoming electric car launches in India.

Filling a tank full of fuel is going to be old-fashioned

As time goes by, the days of petrol and diesel engines are being numbered. Many manufacturers are focusing their attention primarily on electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles. Companies like Tesla, Mercedes-Benz, BMW had released production cars with this technology years ago. It is not long before electric is mainstream and when it comes to India, there are some important electric vehicle (EV) launches to talk about.

For starters, Audi is expected to launch their first EV, the e-tron in India by the end of 2019. The 5-seater SUV sits in between the Q5 and Q7. The global version of the car has a 125 kWh battery at the front and a 140 kWh battery at the rear, producing a total power output of 413 PS and 668 Nm. It is expected to be priced at Rs. 1.5 crores.

There are speculations that Jaguar Land Rover is going to launch the Jaguar I-Pace in India by the second half of 2020. The electric SUV is based on the Jaguar F-Pace which currently sells in India. The car comes with two electric motors on each axle to give it a combined output of 405 PS of power and 698 Nm of torque. A range of 480 kms can be expected from the 90 kWh battery.

Probably the most important EV launch of 2019 in India has to be the Hyundai Kona, as it’s accessible to a comparatively larger audience with a price tag of Rs. 25 lakh (ex-showroom). The Hyundai Kona was launched in India on 9th July 2019. It is an FWD SUV that has a 39.2 kWh battery. It produces 138 PS of power and 395 Nm of torque. It promises an ARAI-rated range of 452 kms.

That’s not all. Many other manufacturers like Tata, Ford, Maruti Suzuki, etc are planning to bring in EVs or plug-in hybrids to India and make the technology affordable for the mass market. Having said that, it will take years for electric vehicles to replace fuel-powered transport in India due to the lack of infrastructure like charging stations in the country.
