MG-Gloster-1
MG Gloster

MG Gloster was launched in India in October 2020 to take on the likes of Toyota Fortuner, Ford Endeavour and Mahindra Alturas G4. Since then it has received a minor update in August 2021 with a new 7-Seater variant available with both turbo and twin-turbo engine options to cater to the demand of the Indian market. It is mated to an 8-Speed automatic torque converter.

Pros –  Feature Loaded, Engine Performance, Road Presence

Cons –  No Petrol Engine, 360° Camera Quality, 3rd Row Experience

MG Gloster Exterior

The MG Gloster is 4985mm in length, 1926mm in width and 1867mm in height. The car looks imposing from the front and is bound to draw attention. It gets automatic headlamps with adaptive LED projectors, cornering lamps with the Fu Manchu chrome treatment, LED DRLs and LED taillamps. From the side, the car doesn’t get any cuts and creases or a chrome strip on the lower side of the door. However, it gets a massive footboard to assist passengers to get inside the car along with chrome-finished door handles. On the rear, the Gloster happens to get a busy design with a lot of badges. The tail lamps are connected via the chrome strip with the MG logo at the centre. The car gets four exhaust pipes (one fake and one real on each side).

MG Gloster Interior

The cabin of the MG Gloster does feel premium and gets a tan and a black colour theme. There is a good amount of leather inside the car. At the centre, one can find a huge 12.3-inch multi infotainment system with the usual Android Auto and Apple CarPlay features. One can find an eye-catching piano black treatment near the gearbox. It is also offered with Gaana voice commands and Shortpedia news app. Other features include 12 speakers, a panoramic sunroof, ventilated driver and co-driver’s seat with ventilation memory for the former, wireless charging, PM 2.5 filter and much more. The unique selling point has to be the auto parking feature offered on the Gloster. In terms of features, nothing in its segment can come close to the Gloster.

MG Gloster Space

At the front, there are two cup holders near the gearbox, four bottle holders (one on each door), a sunglass holder and some storage space inside the front armrest. Coming to the second row, there is ample knee room offered. The headroom is also decent without any reason to complain. There is some storage space at the rear below the rear AC vent in the second row. The third row is equipped with a 60:40 split which increases the boot space to 1350 litres. However it’s not very spacious.

MG Gloster Engine Performance

In the Indian market, the MG Gloster gets a 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder turbo and a twin-turbo diesel engine mated to an automatic (torque converter) gearbox option. The petrol engine makes 161 PS of power at 4000 RPM and 375 Nm of torque between 1500-2400 RPM.

The diesel engine makes 218 PS of power at 4000 RPM and 480 Nm of torque between 1500-2400 RPM. The engine is supremely refined and the vibrations experienced are minimal. The low end is quite responsive when the foot is placed on the gas. The high end does have a tendency to get vocal though while the mid-range is excellent. The car gets 7 driving modes – auto, eco, sport, snow, mud, sand and rock.

MG Gloster Mileage

The ARAI mileage of the MG Gloster is 12.35 km/l. In real-world conditions, one can expect around 7-8 km/l in the city which would increase out on the highway.

MG Gloster Handling

The car does have a significant amount of body roll at high speeds which implies that it doesn’t respond well around the corners. The ride quality of the MG Gloster is exceptional. Even on bumpy roads and crossing potholes, the Gloster keeps its passengers in comfort.

MG Gloster Comfort

The front seats of the Gloster get a 12-way adjustment with four levels of the lumbar support. Coming to the second row, the seats get independent armrests with twin cup holders in the six-seater variant.  The rear passengers also get their own climate zone along with a USB port and a 12V charging socket. The seats get recline and the sliding feature along with adjustable headrests. However, things are slightly tight in the third row. There isn’t an ample amount of knee room offered. It also lacks under-thigh support. The only plus is that the third row also gets adjustable headrests.

MG Gloster Safety

The MG Gloster is equipped with safety features like 6 Airbags, Electronic Stability Program (ESP), Traction Control System (TCS), Automatic Vehicle Hold (AVH), Hill Hold Control (HHC), 360° View Camera, Hill Descent Control (HDC), Electric Parking Brake with Autohold, Driver Fatigue Reminder System and much more.

MG Gloster Service

MG is not yet there when it comes to the number of service centres in India which is understandable considering they entered the Indian market in 2019. Nevertheless, they are quickly picking up pace and doing their best to offer top-notch services to their customers and increase their network across India.

With MG being a new carmaker in India, it would be too early to comment whether it would be able to prove its value or not, nevertheless, the future prospects for the Gloster look bright. The resale value also depends on the number of kilometres driven along with the condition in which the vehicle is in.

MG Gloster Upcoming Models

MG recently added a 7-Seater variant for the Gloster. Considering MG is still experimenting with the current generation of Gloster in India, the new generation seems unlikely in the immediate future.

MG Gloster vs Toyota Fortuner

Toyota Fortuner is offered with both petrol and diesel trims which is not the case with the MG Gloster and the other rivals. The Toyota Fortuner also has the most powerful Diesel engine in the segment producing 204 PS of power at 3400 RPM. However, it has the shortest wheelbase among its competitors. Thus if space is a priority then there are better options to look for than the Toyota Fortuner.

MG Gloster vs Ford Endeavour

The unique selling point of the Ford Endeavour is the power-folding third-row seat option. However, the Ford Endeavour is not offered with ventilated seats, which at this price point is quite surprising. MG Gloster is 82mm longer, 57mm wider and 30mm taller than the Ford Endeavour.

MG Gloster vs Mahindra Alturas G4

The standout feature of the Mahindra Alturas G4 is that it has been offered with 9 airbags compared to 6 in MG Gloster and 7 in Toyota Fortuner and Ford Endeavour respectively. MG Gloster is 135mm longer, 34mm slimmer and 22mm shorter than the Mahindra Alturas G4.
