Tata Sierra mileage revealed via RTI months after launch
Fuel efficiency figures for the Tata Sierra have come to light through a Right to Information (RTI) query, months after the SUV was officially launched in November 2025. At the time of its debut, Tata Motors had not disclosed ARAI-certified mileage numbers, leaving a key specification unconfirmed for potential buyers. The newly surfaced data now provides clarity on the Sierra’s real-world fuel efficiency benchmarks as certified by ARAI.
As per the RTI response, the Sierra’s 1.5-litre TGDi Hyperion turbo-petrol engine delivers a claimed mileage of 13.5 km/l. The 1.5-litre Kryojet diesel engine, on the other hand, offers a higher efficiency figure of 18.8 km/l. Certification timelines indicate that the diesel variant received approval on 21 November 2025, while the turbo-petrol engine was certified on 11 December 2025, both aligning closely with the SUV’s launch window. However, the 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol variant is yet to receive an ARAI certification, and its official mileage figure remains undisclosed.
During the launch phase, Tata Motors had instead highlighted a fuel efficiency-related achievement for the turbo-petrol engine, claiming a figure of 29.9 km/l during a controlled endurance run at the NATRAX proving ground in Indore. This figure, recorded in the India Book of Records, was achieved under specific test conditions and differs from standardised ARAI testing procedures, which are typically used for official mileage ratings in India.
Despite the absence of publicly available ARAI mileage figures at launch, the Tata Sierra has witnessed strong market demand. Deliveries began on 15 January 2026 and the company has already crossed the 10,000 units delivery milestone within a short span. The SUV had generated significant initial interest as well, with bookings crossing 70,000 units within the first 24 hours and eventually surpassing the 1 lakh mark, indicating sustained buyer confidence in the product.
To meet this growing demand, Tata Motors is scaling up production at its Sanand manufacturing facility, where the Sierra is produced alongside the Nexon. Monthly production is expected to reach around 15,000 units in the coming months. Additionally, the company is preparing to expand the Sierra lineup with an all-electric version, which is expected to be introduced around mid-2026.
