Adani interest in Buddh Circuit revives hopes of Formula 1 return
There are fresh signs of momentum behind a possible return of Formula 1 to India, with the Adani Group indicating interest in reviving the Indian Grand Prix if its proposed takeover of Jaiprakash Associates goes through. The Buddh International Circuit, located near Greater Noida, is part of the Jaypee Group’s assets and would be included in the wider acquisition plan.
Karan Adani, Managing Director of Adani Ports and SEZ, recently stated at an industry event that he is personally involved in efforts to explore the feasibility of bringing Formula 1 back to the country. His comments suggest the circuit could once again be positioned as a host venue, subject to commercial and regulatory conditions.
India previously hosted three Formula 1 races between 2011 and 2013 at the Buddh International Circuit. While the track itself received positive feedback from teams and drivers, the event was discontinued amid financial challenges and taxation issues, including the classification of Formula 1 as entertainment rather than a sporting event by state authorities at the time.
The venue has since continued to attract international motorsport attention. MotoGP held its first Indian round at the circuit in 2023, although subsequent editions have not yet materialised despite an earlier multi-year understanding with local authorities.
Reports of a recent visit by the Union sports minister to the circuit have added to speculation that discussions around international racing events could be gaining traction again. Any successful takeover of Jaiprakash Associates by the Adani Group may open the door to renewed negotiations with Formula 1 management and potential infrastructure or commercial restructuring.
However, several hurdles remain before a return becomes realistic. Hosting fees for Formula 1 events have risen significantly in recent years, with estimates suggesting promoters may need to commit tens of millions of dollars annually. In addition, the championship calendar is already crowded, forcing some long-standing venues to rotate their races or step aside.
Despite these challenges, India continues to be viewed as a major growth market for the sport. Formula 1’s audience in the country has expanded rapidly in recent years, making it an attractive destination commercially if financial backing, government support and long-term promotion structures can be aligned.
For now, the prospect of Formula 1’s comeback remains exploratory but the renewed corporate interest around the Buddh International Circuit has once again brought the discussion into focus.
