April 2022 hatchback sales – Maruti Suzuki Swift suffers greatest setback

In April 2022, hatchback sales were disastrous with only 2 cars registering growth in the first place. Rest all the cars have performed poorly with most posting double-digit de-growth. Maruti Suzuki Swift has faced the greatest setback.

Maruti Suzuki Alto becomes the highest selling A-segment car in April

In the A segment, Maruti Suzuki Alto clinched the top spot from S-Presso by selling more than 10k units although sales was nothing close to what the country’s cheapest car achieved last year. Coming second and third, Maruti Suzuki S-Presso and Renault Kwid too didn’t perform as last year.

In the B-segment, Maruti Suzuki Wagon R became the number 1 selling car. In fact, it was the best selling car of the month all segments combined. It also nearly maintained its sales as last year and became the face-saver for the brand.

Maruti Suzuki Wagon R leads the pack

Hyundai Grand i10 Nios came second although with double-digit de-growth. Maruti Suzuki Swift came third but it has suffered the most in the list with a huge 51 percent de-growth. It could not even manage half of the sales it did last year, a worrying sign for Maruti Suzuki.

Like its brother Wagon R, Maruti Suzuki Celerio witnessed good sales registering quadrupled growth thanks to the comprehensive update it received. Tata Tiago, Maruti Suzuki Ignis, and Hyundai Santro took the remaining spots.

Finally, in the C-segment, Maruti Suzuki Baleno not only maintained its lead but also by a comfortable margin. But, still performance was not up to the mark considering it got a comprehensive update only this year. Hope the brand speeds up deliveries to increase performance next month.

Hyundai i20 Elite came second selling over 4k units. Although sales remain almost unaffected compared to last year, it’s still no match for i20 sales in its hey days. Tata Altroz came third with nearly the sales of the i20. But, it seems, Tata Punch has taken away its major share.
