Bajaj hints at Avenger 220 Street’s comeback via recent type approval filing
Bajaj Auto may be preparing for the potential relaunch of its Avenger 220 Street, as suggested by a recent type approval filing with the Delhi Transport Department. The document names the 220 Street as a variant of the Avenger 220 Cruise, indicating that Bajaj might be considering reintroducing the model to its current line-up.
The Avenger range has undergone multiple changes in recent years. Currently, the lineup includes only two variants—the Avenger 160 Street and the Avenger 220 Cruise. The 220 Street was initially discontinued in 2020, likely due to dwindling demand but made a brief return in 2023 before once again being quietly withdrawn from the market. It is no longer listed on Bajaj’s official website.
Historically, the Avenger 220 Street was positioned as an urban-friendly alternative to the more tourer-focused 220 Cruise. Key differences included design and ergonomics. The Street variant featured alloy wheels, lower-set handlebars and limited chrome detailing, making it more suited to city riding. In contrast, the Cruise offered spoke wheels, taller handlebars, more chrome accents and a larger fly-screen, appealing to long-distance riders.
The new type approval document notes some subtle changes in the Street model, including a 72 mm lower overall height compared to the Cruise and a 3 kg lighter gross vehicle weight. The 220cc engine remains consistent, producing 18.77 BHP at 8400 RPM and is compliant with both E20 fuel and the updated OBD-2B emissions standards.
Despite these developments, Bajaj has not officially confirmed the model’s return. The filing could merely serve to keep the option open, allowing the company to respond to market demand should interest in the Street variant resurface.
