Bajaj and KTM are now working towards launching electric cycles and a range of performance electric 2-wheelers by 2022.
Adding a new page in their 12-year old partnership, Bajaj and KTM have announced that the duo is now working towards launching electric cycles and a range of performance electric 2-wheelers by 2022.
It is to be noted that this electric motorcycle project is independent of the electric scooter that Bajaj has developed and will launch in the next financial year. All these battery-powered 2-wheelers will be produced at Bajaj’s Pune-based factory.
Currently, Bajaj holds close to 48% stake through an overseas subsidiary in KTM AG, the owner of KTM and Husqvarna brands. It has also agreed to buy equity shares in KTM Industries AG; the parent company of KTM AG which will be soon known as Pierer Mobility AG.
KTM is not new to electric mobility as it does have one electric model, the Freeride E-XC on sale in Europe. Priced at Rs. 6 lakhs (7500 Euros), the bike is not available in India. The brand is also developing a 4 kW off-road motorcycle called Freeride Light that will be launched next year.
At the beginning of this year, KTM launched an electric bicycle under the Husqvarna brand for around Rs. 2.67-3.3 lakhs (3400-4200 Euros). A stand-up, without a seat scooter, is under development and will be launched in 2020-21 along with a full-electric power scooter.
