Yamaha FZ Facelift Spy Shot Air Scoops

The Yamaha FZ is all set to get a comprehensive facelift and a bigger engine later this year and certainly is one of the most awaited motorcycles of 2014. With Yamaha testing the bike extensively, Overdrive reader Mohit Bhardwaj spotted the FZ test mule on a break and captured some really clear images revealing a lot about how the motorcycle will look upon launch. The next generation FZ was showcased in the form of the FZ concept that was on display at the 2014 Auto Expo earlier this year, with the production model taking lots of cues from the concept.

Most notably, the digital instrument cluster has received a much needed redesign featuring an all digital display instead of shoddy stickers. The headlight unit has been worked upon and also feature clear lens turn indicators. As said in our earlier posts, the new FZ looks leaner losing some of that muscular bulge seen on the current model. The air scoops below the tank shown on the concept make an appearance on the production model as well. The tyre size has been reduced to improve economy, the rear tyre is 120 mm wide instead of 140 section seen on the current model.

Yamaha has also worked upon a smart looking rear tail light cluster with integrated number plate holder, while the exhaust gets a bit longer going with the leaner theme and a brushed aluminium finish. Other changes on the Yamaha FZ include split seats as well as split grab rails. Better looking rear view mirrors would be appreciated though. On the mechanical front, the FZ is expected to get an updated powertrain featuring a 170cc carbureted mill. Essentially a re-bored 153cc motor, the engine will be tuned to produce 17 PS of power and will be paired to a 5-speed transmission.

Yamaha has also missed out on the kick starter, which is available on the current version. The next generation FZ will be competing against the Honda CB Trigger, TVS Apache RTR series and the Suzuki Gixxer 155 that will also see a launch in the coming months. While the current Yamaha FZ-S starts at Rs. 76,465 (ex-showroom, Mumbai), expect the next generation model to come with a marginal price hike.
