Delhi-NCR bans new petrol, diesel fleet vehicles from 2026 to cut pollution

Starting January 1, 2026, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) will enforce a ban on the addition of new petrol and diesel vehicles to commercial fleets in Delhi-NCR. The directive applies to light commercial vehicles, goods carriers and two-wheelers used by cab aggregators, delivery services and e-commerce platforms.

The move is intended to curb worsening air quality in the region, with CAQM identifying commercial fleet vehicles as a major source of emissions. These vehicles tend to operate for longer hours and are often poorly maintained, resulting in higher pollution levels than private vehicles.

Under the new regulation, only electric and CNG-powered vehicles will be permitted to join commercial fleets. The policy aligns with the Delhi government’s 2023 Motor Vehicle Aggregator and Delivery Service Provider Scheme, which mandates that companies with more than 25 vehicles register on a central portal to ensure regulatory compliance and improve monitoring.

In addition, CAQM has called on neighbouring states—Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan—to adopt similar measures, particularly in densely populated urban centres like Gurugram, Noida, Ghaziabad and Faridabad.
