Mumbai has joined the growing list of cities offering E85 fuel, with the installation of its first E85 dispensing station. The fuel is priced at Rs 91.18 per litre, making it significantly cheaper than the regular E20 petrol currently sold in the city.
E85 fuel consists of 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent petrol, compared to the E20 blend that contains up to 20 percent ethanol and is now widely available across India. While the lower price may attract attention, E85 is designed exclusively for flex-fuel vehicles capable of operating on high-ethanol blends and cannot be used in conventional petrol-powered vehicles.
To ensure clarity for consumers, fuel stations offering E85 are expected to use dedicated dispensers and clear signage identifying the fuel type. This is aimed at preventing accidental refuelling in vehicles that are not compatible with higher ethanol concentrations.
The number of E85-compatible vehicles available in India remains limited. In the two-wheeler segment, a handful of flex-fuel motorcycles have either been launched or announced. In the passenger vehicle space, flex-fuel offerings are currently restricted, with some models being supplied primarily to commercial and fleet operators.
The rollout of E85 fuel forms part of the government’s broader strategy to increase ethanol usage in the transportation sector, reduce dependence on imported crude oil and support domestic ethanol production. Authorities have indicated that additional E85 outlets will be introduced across the country over the coming months.
The expansion plan includes hundreds of E85 dispensing stations by the end of 2026, with a substantially larger network targeted for 2027. However, wider adoption of the fuel is expected to depend on the availability of compatible vehicles and supporting infrastructure.
As India’s ethanol-blending programme continues to evolve, the introduction of E85 fuel marks another step toward diversifying fuel options, although its immediate impact is likely to remain limited to a niche group of flex-fuel vehicle owners.
