India introduces Rs. 3000 FASTag annual highway pass for private vehicle owners
In a significant move aimed at enhancing the convenience of highway travel, the Government of India will roll out a FASTag-based Annual Pass for private vehicle users beginning August 15, 2025. The announcement, made by Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari, highlights efforts to streamline toll collection and reduce travel delays across the country’s national highway network.
The Annual Pass will be priced at Rs. 3000 and will be available exclusively to non-commercial private vehicles. Valid for up to one year from activation or for 200 trips, whichever is reached first. The initiative is expected to benefit frequent highway commuters.
To activate or renew the pass, users will be able to access a dedicated platform via the Rajmarg Yatra App as well as the official websites of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH).
The policy is also designed to address long-standing issues surrounding toll plazas located within a 60 km radius. By offering a fixed-price, digital toll payment option, the Annual Pass aims to cut down on congestion, minimise disputes at toll booths and enhance the overall efficiency of the highway toll system.
While the move has been welcomed by many private vehicle owners for its potential to reduce travel time and cost, some transport experts note the need for clear enforcement mechanisms and public awareness campaigns to ensure smooth adoption.
