Audi unveils the fifth generation A4 sedan in pictures and even though the exteriors look similar, the vehicle actually carries a whole lot of changes.

2016 Audi A4
The Audi A4 enters its fifth generation now and will go on sale in 2016

The fourth generation Audi A4, i.e. the current one has been in the market for 8 years now. With rivals like Mercedes and BMW having launched new generation models of the C-Class and 3-Series respectively, it was high time that Audi too introduced its latest sedan that competes with the other two. The A4 was getting too outdated and there didn’t seem to be anything special in it anymore. Now, the German auto giant has finally revealed the fifth generation A4 in pictures.

At first glance, the new A4 looks strikingly similar to the current model. It is only when you notice closely is when you discover all the minor changes. The front grille retains a similar shape but it now gets far more broader and sharper edges. The headlights too feature a sharp design now. The new LED DRLs are similar to the ones on the new TT and Q7. The side profile is pretty much simple and uncluttered while the rear again features new tail lights that look stylish. The new A4 is built on a heavily tweaked platform which makes the sedan 120 kgs lighter than the outgoing version.

The interiors of the vehicle are a drastic change over the current model. The steering wheel and gear selector are all-new while other bits are also much better now. The 2016 Audi A4 comes with some new tech like the Audi Virtual Cockpit that also features on the TT. The instrument panel will get a 12.3-inch screen TFT display while the centre display will be a 8.3-inch unit along with Audi’s MMI system. A Bang & Olufsen audio system with 3D sound and 19 speakers produces 755 watts of sound. The audio system is also compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The fifth generation A4 has a 0.23 coefficient of drag.

In Germany, Audi will offer 7 engine options with the A4. The TDI engines will be available in tunes ranging from 150 HP to 272 HP while the TFSI engines will be offered with power between 190 HP to 252 HP. These engines will be mated to a 6-speed manual transmission or a 7-speed dual-clutch tranny or an 8-speed automatic gearbox. Models producing more than 190 HP of power will be made available with the Audi Drive Select system as well. The S4 and Avant versions of the new A4 will follow soon. It will go on sale in global markets by the end of 2015 and we can expect Audi to launch it in India at the 2016 Auto Expo.
