Hyundai starts engine production at Talegaon plant, full operations in 2025

Hyundai Motor India has officially begun production of passenger vehicle engines at its newly acquired Talegaon facility in Maharashtra, marking a key milestone in its expansion plans. The production activity, which started on June 16, is part of the company’s broader strategy to strengthen its manufacturing footprint in India.

Located in the MIDC Phase-II Expansion area of Pune’s Maval tehsil, the Talegaon plant was formerly operated by General Motors. The facility, which boasts an annual capacity of 160,000 engines and 130,000 vehicles, is currently focused on engine production, with full-scale vehicle manufacturing expected to start by the fourth quarter of 2025.

Hyundai acquired the plant as part of a Rs. 6000 crore investment commitment in Maharashtra, announced in January 2024 during the World Economic Forum in Davos. The investment includes upgrades to the Talegaon facility to support increased production volumes and operational capabilities.

Though Hyundai has not yet specified when vehicle assembly will commence at the site, the company has stated that an announcement will follow in due course. The Talegaon facility is strategically important as Hyundai aims to ramp up domestic production to meet growing demand and reduce reliance on imports.

The site, originally built in 2008, continued limited operations under General Motors for exports until 2020, despite the American automaker’s exit from the Indian market in 2017. It comes equipped with infrastructure including a logistics distribution center, training center, and administrative offices, offering Hyundai a ready-made platform for rapid scale-up.

This development comes just weeks after Hyundai celebrated its 29th anniversary in India on May 6. The company has sold over 12.7 million units in the country since 1996 and recently pledged an additional Rs. 1500 crore for the modernisation of its Chennai plant, underscoring its long-term commitment to the Indian market.
