Land Rover has launched the Defender 90 with a price tag of Rs. 73.98 lakhs and the Defender 110 at Rs. 79.94 lakhs (both prices, ex-showroom).

Stated as the most capable Land Rover yet, the Defender comes in five variants – Standard, S, SE, HSE and First Edition and there will be four accessory packs – Explorer, Adventure, Country, Urban – for customers to choose from.

With its tough body style, purposeful exterior design like the floating pillars, the SUVs look more tougher having short overhangs, squared-off wheel arches, and high ground clearance.

Further, there are seven colour options to choose from including Pangea Green, Gondwana Stone and Tasman Blue.

Inside, the Defender 90 price gets customers modern touches like the 12.3-inch driver display, 10-inch touchscreen for Pivi Pro infotainment system, head-up display, top-spec sound system, a choice of veneers and finishes on the console, among many other features, while also being rugged at the same time.

Built on a monocoque architecture, Land Rover claims it has tested the Defender in some of the most extreme conditions.

In terms of mechanicals, the Defender, both on 90 and 110 guise is powered by a 2.0-litre petrol motor putting out 296 HP and 400 Nm that is sent to all four wheels via an 8-speed automatic gearbox.

There is also a twin-speed transfer box, electronic active differential (optional), configurable Terrain Response, Hill Descent Control, All Terrain Progress Control, approach angle of 38 degrees, breakover angle of up to 31 degrees and a departure angle of 40 degrees, making the SUVs very capable off-roaders.

Suspension-wise, there are double wishbones at the front and multi-link jobbies at the rear, while electronic air suspension can also be had. The latter will enable the height to be adjusted. Wading depth of the car is at 900 mm, while wheel sizes range from 18 to 20 inches.

More features like 3D surround camera, all-LED lighting as standard with the option to spec Matrix LED headlights, folding fabric roof (Defender 90 only), panroramic sunroof and a whole host of driver assistance and safety features either come as standard or can be selected from the vast options list.
