Lexus launches ES 500e EV in India with 580 km range and AWD

Lexus has introduced the new-generation ES sedan in India, with the all-electric ES 500e priced at Rs. 89.99 lakhs (ex-showroom). This marks the brand’s first fully electric offering for the Indian market. Alongside the EV, Lexus has confirmed that a petrol-hybrid ES 350h will continue in the lineup, with its pricing to be announced at a later stage.

Built on the TNGA-K platform, which it shares with the Toyota Camry, the eighth-generation ES brings updates across design, features and powertrain options. The model is now available in two variants globally – the hybrid 350h and the electric 500e.

Powertrain and performance

The ES 500e introduces a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup powered by a 74.68kWh battery pack. The front motor produces 227 HP and 267 Nm, while the rear motor generates 120 HP and 170 Nm. Combined system output stands at 343 HP and 438 Nm. Lexus claims a 0-100 km/hr acceleration time of 5.5 seconds.

The company states a claimed driving range of up to 580 km on a single charge. Charging options include an 11kW AC home charger, while a 150kW DC fast charger can replenish the battery from 10 to 80 percent in approximately 28 minutes.

The ES 350h hybrid, expected to follow, will use a 2.5-litre petrol engine paired with an electric motor and an e-CVT gearbox. The petrol unit produces 178 HP and 221 Nm, while the electric motor contributes 120 HP and 202 Nm. The combined system output is rated at 247 HP.

Design and dimensions

The new ES adopts Lexus’ updated ‘Provocative Simplicity’ design language, moving away from the traditional spindle grille. The front features slim ‘twin L-signature’ lighting elements and vertically stacked headlamp units integrated into blacked-out sections.

In profile, the sedan gets a coupe-like roofline, flush door handles and new alloy wheels of up to 19 inches. At the rear, connected LED tail-lamps with ‘Lexus’ lettering and a subtle decklid spoiler element add to the design changes.

The eighth-generation ES has grown in size, measuring 5145 mm in length, 1920 mm in width and 1575 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2950 mm. Lexus has also increased the ground clearance by 20 mm for Indian conditions, now standing at 158 mm.

Interior and features

Inside, the ES follows a ‘Clean Tech x Elegance’ theme, focusing on a cleaner layout and improved sense of space. The cabin incorporates a large panoramic glass roof, slimmer seat structures and lowered window lines to enhance openness.

Physical controls have largely been replaced by proximity-based touch elements that illuminate when needed. Ambient lighting elements, including music-synced illumination in the door panels, add a modern touch.

The sedan features a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14-inch infotainment system. Other highlights include a Mark Levinson audio system, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless charging, powered seats with memory functions and a head-up display.

Rear-seat comfort remains a key focus, with options such as reclining seats, an ottoman function and seat massagers. Lexus has also worked on improving cabin insulation for better noise suppression.

Safety and driver assistance

The ES is equipped with a comprehensive suite of safety and driver assistance systems. These include adaptive cruise control, lane-change assist, collision mitigation systems, blind-spot monitoring, driver attention alerts and adaptive high-beam assist.

Standard safety equipment also includes 10 airbags, surround-view cameras, electronic stability control, hill-hold assist, parking sensors and an electronic parking brake with auto-hold.
