The new compact SUV is based on the SsangYong Tivoli which is on sale in the global market.
Mahindra is taking full advantage of its SsangYong subsidiary which it bought in 2011. The new S201 compact SUV from Mahindra has been spotted at a dealership in Karnataka. It is based on the SsangYong Tivoli and the images suggest that the launch of the S201 is near, expected to make it to the Indian market later this year.
The new Mahindra S201 is a compact SUV which can seat five people. It will come with a host of features like dual climate control, disc brakes on all the four wheels, projector headlamps, LED tail lamps, sunroof and a new 7-inch infotainment system. It will also receive a long list of safety features which will also include multiple airbags.
Even though the Mahindra S201 compact SUV is based on the SsangYong Tivoli, it might miss on ventilated seats with leather upholstery, electrically operated and heated rear view mirrors and front parking sensors which are offered with the Tivoli in the UK.
The S201 is expected to be powered by a new 1.6-litre engine which Mahindra has been developing along with SsangYong. No exact specifications are yet known. Other engine options might include a 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder turbo petrol engine and a 1.5-litre mHawk diesel engine. Transmission duties are expected to be performed by a manual or an automatic gearbox but exact pairing will only be known at the time of the official launch.
The spotting of the Mahindra S201 being unloaded at a dealership clearly means that the launch is nearing. The compact SUV will most likely be priced around the Rs. 10 lakh mark which means it will compete with the Hyundai Creta, Maruti Vitara Brezza, Ford EcoSport and the Tata Nexon.
