Mahindra Scorpio 4WD Automatic Side

The base version of the Mahindra Scorpio 4-wheel drive automatic has been caught testing earlier today by Suraj Desai. Mahindra offered the Scorpio Automatic 4WD in the fully loaded VLX trim but discontinued it last year after Drivetrain Systems International of Australia stopped supplying kits. It seems like the manufacturer is planning to re-introduce the Scorpio AT and is testing a new automatic transmission on the SUV. According to reports, Mahindra is also planning to launch an all new Scorpio with a new design and powertrain options, which is expected to be launched not before 2014.

The Mahindra Scorpio is powered by a 2.2-litre mHawk turbocharged diesel engine that is capable of producing a maximum power output of 120 BHP at 4000 RPM and a peak torque figure of 290 Nm between 1800-2800 RPM. This engine is mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox and soon the 6-speed automatic transmission will join in too. The manufacturer needs to introduce a new model of the Scorpio soon, to take on the highly competent rivals like the Renault Duster, Tata Safari Storme and soon to be launched Ford EcoSport.

The Scorpio VLX variant comes with an optional 4WD system along with a long list of equipment including airbags, tyre pressure monitoring system, intelli-park, rain and light sensors, multimedia system with Bluetooth, steering mounted controls, cruise control and alloy wheels. In order to keep the pricing low, Mahindra will offer many variants of the 4WD automatic Scorpio, which might not get all the high end features offered in the VLX variant. The Mahindra Scorpio comes with a starting price of Rs. 7.74 lakhs (ex-showroom, Delhi).
