Mahindra Thar 5 Door Prototype

Mahindra Thar Armada to come with three engine options

The much anticipated Mahindra Thar 5 door, also referred to as the Thar Armada, is set to hit the market by the festive season this year. It is speculated that this new variant will include a 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder diesel engine, currently seen in the 3 door Thar RWD model. This addition will serve as the entry-level powerplant in the Thar Armada lineup, which aims to cater to a broader segment of SUV buyers.

The Thar Armada will not only feature the 1.5-litre diesel engine but will also include more options. The higher variants are expected to be equipped with the same engines found in the Scorpio N, specifically the 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine producing 175 HP and the 2.0-litre mStallion turbo petrol engine generating 203 HP. Both 4WD and 2WD configurations will be available, along with options for 6-speed manual and automatic transmissions.

By introducing the 1.5-litre diesel engine, Mahindra aims to attract midsize SUV customers who might be considering alternatives such as the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos. The Thar Armada is positioned as a more rugged, 5-seater alternative to the Scorpio N, offering a blend of off-road capability and everyday practicality.

Though official bookings have not been announced by Mahindra, several dealers are already accepting unofficial orders with booking amounts ranging from Rs. 25,000/- to Rs. 50,000/-. The Thar Armada is expected to be priced from around Rs. 15 lakhs (ex-showroom), positioning it slightly above the Scorpio N. This pricing strategy suggests an increase of over Rs. 3 lakhs compared to the entry-level 3 door Thar 1.5 diesel RWD.

The Thar Armada will compete with the recently launched Force Gurkha 5 door and the Maruti Jimny. Are you planning to buy the bigger Thar? Let us know in the comments section below.
