Flat panels and high ground clearance, the TUV300 certainly looks rugged in sketches

The splurge of compact SUVs over the past two to three years turned beneficial for international automakers that managed to make the most out of the nascent segment. Clearly, Mahindra has been late to the party, but the automaker is making up for it with a slew of launches planned over the year. More recently, the large utility vehicle manufacturer unveiled the name of its first small SUV christened the ‘TUV300’ that will go on sale in September this year and has now launched a microsite for the same.

Mahindra’s new TUV300 will be positioned below the Scorpio in the company’s lineup and is based on a completely new platform. The Indian auto giant has stated that the rugged SUV takes its inspiration from a battle tank and has received inputs from Italian design house Pininfarina for styling and engineering. Much like Mahindra’s flagship XUV500, the new TUV300 is being marketed as a global model and will go on sale overseas as well in Left Hand Drive (LHD) configuration.

In terms of powertrain, Mahindra has announced a new mHawk 80 diesel engine for the TUV300 based on the larger mHawk motor and will most likely be a 1.5-litre unit to adhere to the excise duty norms. Given its sub 4-metre dimensions, the SUV will gain a significant pricing advantage and extensive localisation will help the product undercut rival Ford EcoSport by a healthy margin. Developed at Mahindra’s R&D facility in Chennai, the automaker is calling the TUV300 a true blue SUV and will offer a 4WD variant later in the timeline of the product. The teaser video for the TUV300 has been updated on the web. Make sure to check it out below.
